New residents must get a NC driver license within 60 days and register their vehicle within 30 days. Here is how.
Getting your NC driver license
Visit a NC DMV office with proof of identity, Social Security number, proof of residency, and your out-of-state license. You may need to take a written test if your out-of-state license is expired.

- Bring: out-of-state license, SSN, 2 proofs of NC address
- Cost: $5.50 per year (typically $44 for 8 years)
- No road test required if out-of-state license is valid

Registering your vehicle
Register your vehicle within 30 days. You need a NC driver license, proof of insurance, vehicle title, and odometer reading. If your vehicle is financed, request title from lienholder.

- Highway use tax: 3% of vehicle value

NC auto insurance requirements
